Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Project Description and Aim

To determine the frequency of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in children in Scotland.

Case Definition

Clinical features (see here) include

  1. Facial
    1. Smooth philtrum
    2. Thin upper lip
    3. Short palpebral fissures
  2. Poor growth
    1. In utero < 10th centile for gestation
    2. Postnatal – FTT
  3. structural or functional brain abnormality
    1. head circumference < 10th centile  or microcephaly with increasing age
    2. abnormal MRI (do not do specially, but only if clinical indication)
    3. developmental delay

Plus a history of alcohol intake in pregnancy – often best obtained from Obstetric notes or a phone call to the GP.

Note – Dysmorpholgy may be more apparent to a clinical geneticist than paediatrician.

Inclusion Criteria

  • Please report suspected cases (less than 6 years of age) when diagnosis was considered in the previous month or so.

  • Exclusion Criteria

  • Age 6 years or more.
