Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Project Description and Aim

  • To determine the annual incidence of CRPS in children under the age of 16 years in Scotland
  • To establish the clinical spectrum of the disease
  • To document the treatment models used for the condition
  • To define the presence or absence of other co-morbidities
  • To investigate the medium (over 1 year) and long term (over 3-5 years) prognosis of the condition

Case Definition of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)*

  1. The presence of a noxious initiating event or a cause of immobilisation
  2. Continuing pain, allodynia or hyperalgesia that is disproportionate to the inciting event
  3. Evidence at some time of oedema, change in skin blood flow, or abnormal sudomotor activity in the region of pain

Inclusion Criteria

  • All children under the age of 16 years presenting to paediatricians fitting the case definition - diagnosed over the previous month.

  • Exclusion Criteria

  • The existence of conditions that would otherwise account for the degree of pain and dysfunction.
