Anaphylaxis in children and young people < 16 years in Scotland

Project Description and Aim

To determine the incidence of anaphylaxis in children and young people in Scotland.

Case definition of anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe and systemic hypersensitivity reaction of sudden onset and rapid progression with compromise of ONE (or more) of the following:

  1. The airway (stridor)
  2. Breathing (wheeze, respiratory distress, tight chest)
  3. Circulation (pallor, weakness, collapse, reduced level of consciousness)

This may be associated with skin and mucosal changes or gastrointestinal symptoms.

Reporting instructions:

All patients under the age of 16 years with either an anaphylactic event in the previous month or given a diagnosis of anaphylaxis in the previous month.
